Wednesday Wagers: Matthew Olczak

A good young designer based in London. Check his work. Love his typography.

Have had the pleasure of working with him on It’s Mealti.me. And my personal bio site. Lovely lad to work with. As committed as you can get.

Show him some love.

Wednesday Wagers: Carolyn Sewell

It’s always good to see graphic designers who started out as painters / artists who can draw. These days, almost all designers, are useless without a computer. Advertising Agencies check for portfolios that are computer-made and not appreciate or encourage hand drawing.

Carolyn Sewell is an awesome designer. Her personal projects are way more interesting. I would love to receive handmade cards. Who wouldn’t.

Wednesday Wagers: Julie Qiu

Never seen anyone who loves Oysters as much as Julie does.

Her day job as a Planner in an Ad Agency hardly tells anything about her.

I knew her through a freelance stint in the agency she works. I have learnt to form an opinion about people in knowing what they do when they don’t work. Was in for a pleasant surprise when I asked what she does in her spare time. Photographer. Blogger. Oyster lover. Foodie.

It is quite encouraging to know people like her work in this in business of making rich people more richer and do some silly work.

Here’s someone who is willing to explore the curiosity. Which pretty much resonated with who I am.

Here’s her amazing blog: In A Half Shell

Wednesday Wagers: Jackie Do

Talent is a very fragile possession. It wanes out with belief and conviction. Lack of it, that is.

Mainstream work and talent don’t match most often, for most people. Very few people get to do for living that fulfills their talent. Academic proficiency is different to individual preferences. When we are young, most of us, are made to believe grades are holy grail and rest is all sundry.

I came across Jackie’s work through my search of designers / artists for WW section. I contacted her to see if she was willing to talk about her passion and desire and where she wanted to go with her painting. And, we did.

A raw talent honed and developed through her own instincts. Very rare these days to find instinctive talents and she is certainly one. Has a completely different mainstream job but a fledgling interest in painting. Or a fledgling mainstream work with a deep rooted passion for painting. That’s the bridge she needs to cross. And she is determined too.

Perseverance is another word you attach to Jackie and she has that in truck loads. I feel there’s a social responsibility for all of us to see such talents flourish and not fade out due to lack of encouragement and support.

Painting can sometimes be an expensive exercise with Acrylics, Canvas and studio costs. Jackie’s mainstream in some form supports her passion and she also does custom projects.

You could also buy her paintings from her store.

To quote my favourite poet, Aeschylus, “His resolve is not to seem the bravest, but to be”. Her resolve is to be a painter and having seen her and spoken to her, she will.
