The writing is on the wall.

Yes, it is. In Zurich.

I love the 5th point. There are books written to explain how to distinguish sense from nonsense.

I am not sure the office building who wall has the writing has commissioned this, but I think this is done by Swiss artists Fischli & Weiss.

Not all writing on the wall are bad news. Smile.

A cool town, Boulder, is.

Having spent the last 4 days in Boulder, Colorado I feel I have to give some space for this amazing city tucked towards the mid east of US.

It’s a city with enormous promise and amazing spirit. Home to amazing entrepreneurs. That’s where Common is. Here’s where Unreasonable Institue is. Home to Colorado University. Amazing trekking opportunities. At an elevation of over 1,500m, it provides a great training base for long distance runners and cyclists. It has produced amazing athletes in the past.

Home to under 100,000 people, its a city where size is not all. It’s given the world some of the best entrepreneurs. It’s a city of inspiration.

Liberal people, great restaurants,  cozy drink holes everywhere.

And that’s where this funny picture is from. He does look the deal.

Next time when you are in US, make a detour to Boulder. You will surely love it.

A thing of past, straight out of the future

It is difficult to understand the mind of creators. Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas are a couple of creators I coud think of who wanted future to come sooner. At least in their heads. I have come across a few architects too, who see the future far better than we do.

During the ’60s when Yugoslavia (now Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, etc.) was still a country, its President Josip Broz Tito commissioned WW II memorials through some famous architects. They came up with some absolutely brilliant pieces of monuments and they still stand as a symbol of the past. But these designs are anything but past.

You can see the full article and several other memorials here.

A beautiful hotel in London.

‘Nose-to-tail eating’ has become ‘From table to bed’. St. John Hotel.

Great story in their site, beautifully done. I was curious and made a trip to this hotel to see how it looks in real (in my travel experiences, invariably what you see on a site is clearly and contrary to what you get). It doesn’t disappoint, one bit.

A little expensive but worth an experience (choose the post-supper room).

Hotel designed and owned by two architects.

Renewing memories of Martin Luther King & Robert Kennedy

You would go through customs after collecting your baggage, in vast majority of airports. What turns out to be a routine check, invariably its for the naturally tanned skinned ones. I am one of them and I can see this of experience. As recently, last night in the JFK Airport. Over the last 10 years, I have travelled enough. So, what happened to me wasn’t an isolation or an exception.

It’s an incident that I am getting quite used to. Not that I want to but I am beginning to expect at almost all airports around the world. Changi (Singapore), De Gaulle (Paris), HKIA (HK) to name a few. And I see people like me standing in queue to be checked while people of other hues walk by. So I asked the inspector if their instincts just point to one kind of people. He started defending his position which I fully expected to.

I am not sure if they act under instructions or its an instinct. Either way, it is the worst form of marginalization I have come across.

I was on a taxi making my way to the hotel and thinking they named the airport after someone who was instrumental in Civil Rights Movement and here I am, almost 45 years after that, still feeling the brunt of idiocy and ignorance of a few people controlling stuff.

I remembered to check in on a few videos and tapes post Martin Luther King’s death and I found this incredible speech by Robert ‘Bobby’ Kennedy in Indianapolis right  after MLK’s death. A speech that should transcend Colours. Creed. Communities. Here’s a reminder again.
