Do you know the significance of 4am?

It’s a significant hour of the day. You would ask, ‘really?’. It’s an odd hour to talk about. In almost every where in the world, at 4am, people sleep or in the process of sleeping.

I saw this in TED which made me realize there’s more to 4am. I am a big fan of storyteller and poet, Rives. He is charming, eloquent and a fascinating presenter.

I am not done yet.

I saw this 4amproject today.

It’s a project done by Karen Strunks, a photographer from Birmingham, UK. I searched her site to see if there was a reference made to this Rives speech. None. Her instincts connects to something that is prevalent in history midst some famous people.

Creepy but true.

Renewing memories of Martin Luther King & Robert Kennedy

You would go through customs after collecting your baggage, in vast majority of airports. What turns out to be a routine check, invariably its for the naturally tanned skinned ones. I am one of them and I can see this of experience. As recently, last night in the JFK Airport. Over the last 10 years, I have travelled enough. So, what happened to me wasn’t an isolation or an exception.

It’s an incident that I am getting quite used to. Not that I want to but I am beginning to expect at almost all airports around the world. Changi (Singapore), De Gaulle (Paris), HKIA (HK) to name a few. And I see people like me standing in queue to be checked while people of other hues walk by. So I asked the inspector if their instincts just point to one kind of people. He started defending his position which I fully expected to.

I am not sure if they act under instructions or its an instinct. Either way, it is the worst form of marginalization I have come across.

I was on a taxi making my way to the hotel and thinking they named the airport after someone who was instrumental in Civil Rights Movement and here I am, almost 45 years after that, still feeling the brunt of idiocy and ignorance of a few people controlling stuff.

I remembered to check in on a few videos and tapes post Martin Luther King’s death and I found this incredible speech by Robert ‘Bobby’ Kennedy in Indianapolis right  after MLK’s death. A speech that should transcend Colours. Creed. Communities. Here’s a reminder again.

It gets better.

Keeping up with the theme of life lessons, here’s another piece of a nice work from a fellow agency friends at Draft FCB.

Valentine’s day might have passed but love is to stay forever no matter February 14th comes or not. Fight against social stigma is a massive one to live through. Only people fighting it will know the intensity. Civil Rights movement was a documented fight against one of the biggest stigma there is to be. Gay rights is next.

This video is beautifully put together and I think all of them in this video are employees of Draft FCB.

Are you living a life made of plastic?

Suzan Beraza took this idea and made a film out of it. She thinks the world needs a revolution to get us out of it and the revolution can start with a little self education.

Here’s the trailer of the movie, Bag It, she made.

You can arrange your own community screenings of this film if you want to by emailing to Michelle.

Suzan was interviewed by Alex Bogusky and you can see it here.

What motivates us?

It’s not very simple. Freudian philosophies are very hard to understand. There are numerous research done on this and lengthy thesis have been produced.

Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) are in the business of social enlightenment. They are a charity organization dedicated to social progress. I am a huge fan of their videos.

Here’s Dan Pink’s video on what motivates people. It’s a slightly longish video but worth every second of it. While the findings are a little surprising, the nature of how its been told is astonishingly engaging.
