It’s a shelf. It’s a roof. It’s a partition. It’s a stand.

It could be anything really. As you can imagine.

Yi Cong Lu is a Leipzig based, Berlin born Chinese designer who has an incredible sense of space (Germans and Japanese have incredible talent to manage space with design). And he has designed this pane that has more than 3 functions. Every application of it is efficient and aesthetic with very little compromise.

Quite hard not to gasp at this.

You should check out the rest of his work. Every one is quite remarkable.

Great project, one to follow

Imagination is the limit to what designers can do to impact lives in this world in a way that nothing else can.

Here’s a great blog post and a great project.

Designers reading this post, get out there and do something that makes a difference. One project a week. There’s no shortage of needs and it needs all you can offer. Sometimes I wish I can sketch / design / make things. It makes me want to learn carpentry more than anything.

Here a few projects designers can take on: Redesign your local saloon rate card. Redesign your local chinese restaurant or Caribbean restaurant menu card. Change name board designs for street shops who can’t afford one.

These are not ordinary bricks

Schezwan province in China experienced one of the worst earthquakes in 2008 leaving permanent scars on its residents. Affecting more than 500,000 million people and leaving millions homeless.

As with every birth, it starts from an end. The earthquake left with debris that could fill 150 football fields and each fill lasting 5 stories.

The urban development authorities in China went to industrial designers and architects to ask for a solution to dispose of the debris in a way that can be useful for rebuilding.

That’s the story of these Bricks. A great transformation from sadness to something useful both in physical state and emotional state.

Spotted this poster in the Shanghai airport.

Incredible effort and credit to the Chinese for turning it around.

For inspiring interiors

I love the concept of Home. Not a house, but a home. That’s where I spend my time when I am not at work and  for some, it may be boring and lifeless but that’s just them and this is me. I have nothing against people who come home just to sleep. With right people, I would stay out too.

And so, I keep looking for things to live an inspired life at home. Here’s a blog I have loved looking at from time to time.

Pinterest is another.

A life worth living, however short it could turn out to be

Kids surprise adults to no end. With their innocence. With their generosity. With their ability to give. With their ability to share. With their selflessness.

Here’s a heart wrenching story of a 9 year old , Rachel Beckwith, who is fighting for her life after a fatal accident. A life well worth the fight and a life that will teach others a lesson or two. She decided to give up her 9th birthday in exchange for contribution to her charity water project that will help kids in Africa get access to pure water.

While the campaign goal is set at $300 – she has raised 80x of that while I am writing this. And there are 29 days left. Please visit her page and contribute what you can. And also leave a message of support to Rachel and her family.

I am sure she will come out of this to live a life that she deserves.
